FAU - Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
The Neuromuscular Physiology and Neural Interfacing Laboratory (n-squared lab) is fully funded by the FAU and the HTA program of the State of Bavaria. The n-squared lab is a leading research facility dedicated to understanding neuromuscular function and advancing neural interfacing technologies. The lab investigates the development and control of human movement in both healthy and paralyzed individuals using state-of-the-art experimental and analytical methods. A central focus of the n-squared lab is the acquisition and analysis of neural and electrophysiological signals with high spatial and temporal resolution from the central and peripheral nervous systems of humans, non-human primates, and other animal models. These insights are leveraged to develop neural interfaces that decode movement intentions and enable the control of virtual systems (e.g., computers and smartphones) as well as assistive technologies for everyday life and neurorehabilitation. The n-squared lab spans the full spectrum of research, from fundamental science (Technology Readiness Level 1) to application-oriented research and demonstrators (Technology Readiness Level 5), thereby facilitating the translation of scientific discoveries into clinically relevant technologies and competitive spin-offs.
The n-squared lab provides a uniquely integrated research environment for the investigation of human movement, neuromuscular function, and sensing systems for bidirectional neural interfaces. Spanning approximately 230 m² across two dedicated laboratory spaces, the facility combines specialized workshop, experimental, and collaborative work areas to support interdisciplinary research and technology development. The n-squared lab houses a comprehensive portfolio of state-of-the-art instrumentation, including stationary and wearable high-density surface and intramuscular (thin-film and custom developed electrodes) implanted electromyographic systems, advanced motion capture technologies, and high-resolution EEG platforms. The seamless integration of these modalities enables synchronized, multimodal assessment of neural activity, muscle function, and movement kinematics with exceptional accuracy and temporal resolution.
